Rich History

The first inhabitants of South Caicos were Lucayans who arrived over 1,200 years ago. Mysteriously, the island was uninhabited when the first Europeans arrived. In the 17th Century, Bermudians settled South Caicos to work the lucrative salt trade. Following the decline of the salt industry in the 1950's, fishing emerged as the main industry of South Caicos, providing a cultural and historical backbone for the community.
